Why I became a doctor?
My parents are in healthcare and growing up with a mom who is a nurse and a dad who is a nurse anesthetist, I was inundated with medicine from the beginning on my life. However, my parents were not into using prescription drugs as the first line of treatment. So, when I decided to go to medical school, my dad suggested I try a different route. As he put it, “medicine in its current state is failing us and we will need another way and I think Naturopathic Medicine is that way.”
Having already entered my last year of traditional medical school and going on residency interviews, I found myself at a crossroads of anger, confusion and sadness. How can I say that I want to treat the “whole person” with only the tools of drugs and surgery? In the face of fear, I decided to take the “Natural” path less traveled and have never looked back.
Whether I am helping a busy entrepreneur have more energy, to increase their bottom line, or watching a young woman’s self-esteem blossom by helping her treat an unknown skin condition that no other doctor had been able to treat successfully, I believe that my role as a doctor is to inspire my patients to find true health. Health, in its truest form, is not just the absence of disease, but a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. I believe that the “art of medicine” is in the ability of the doctor to meet the patient where they are and give them an understanding of their own optimal health. Coupling this knowledge with support, encouragement and lots of laughs, my patients make the necessary lifestyle changes to improve their quality of life and that is why I became a doctor.
