Dr. Martinez here! I speak about balancing blood sugar to almost every single one of my patients because if done well, it can have an amazing impact on almost all aspects of health, including better energy, moods, stamina, and sleep. Here is my recipe for a Blood Sugar Balancing Smoothie:

🥛 Unsweetened almond milk, coconut milk or water
🫐 ½ cup Frozen Blueberries
🍌 ½ Frozen banana
🥬 Handful of Frozen Kale or Spinach
🥥 1-2 TSP Coconut oil or MCT oil
🥄 One serving of protein powder (at least 20 grams)

Hey Nourish Community! When you think about the importance of managing blood sugar, you may think about conditions like diabetes, but in reality, everyone can benefit from balancing their blood sugar. Here are Dr. Martinez's guidelines for balancing blood sugar:

🚫 DON'T SKIP MEALS
✅ Eat breakfast within 1 hr of waking
✅ Include at least 20 grams of protein in each meal, making sure you are getting at least 80-100 grams per day! (ex: Legumes, Hummus, Organic Eggs, Organic Chicken, Grass Fed Beef, Wild Seafood, Nuts/Seeds, Protein powder)
✅ Include a healthy fat in each meal (ex: Avocado, Nuts/Nut butters, Seeds, Olive Oil, Coconut oil, Avocado oil)
✅ Include plenty of fiber in each meal (ex: non-starchy veggies, flax and chia seeds)
⚠️ Limit carbohydrates to nutrient-dense, low glycemic types (ex: sweet potato, squashes, quinoa, beans, lentils, organic corn tortillas, oats)- include no more than 1 cup in each meal
🚫 Avoid sugar and refined flour products (ex: added sugar, breads, pastas, crackers, pastries..)
🚫 Avoid inflammatory foods/trigger foods (ex: gluten, dairy, refined flour products, added sugar, alcohol, lectins in high quantities)

Hi everyone- Dr. Natasha Monterey here! I can't believe it but it is officially that time of year! Back to school! It can be a super exciting time of year for kids and families, but inevitably comes with a plethora of new germs! Getting sick (aka building that immune system!) is absolutely a normal part of childhood, and life! On average elementary students will get sick 8-12 times per year! But, it doesn't mean it is any fun. The good news there are things we can all do to set our kiddos (and selves!) up for success. There is a lot of info out there on immune support so I am going to get creative and give you some of my favorite recommendations that aren't quite as common, but can be sooooo helpful!

1. Rinse everyone's nose with saline after school- I know, some kiddos protest this big time, but you are literally rinsing away germs! Often if you let them do it themselves they will be more open to it. This can be so helpful in minimizing exposure.

2. Wash everyone's hands! I know what you are thinking, come on we already know this. But really! You need to wash for at LEAST 20 seconds! I guarantee that is longer than you think. Start singing that Birthday song...

3. Also, wash their faces! That's right, if you can right when the kiddos get home (and wash their hands!!) have them wash their faces as well. This can help decrease virus exposure as well!

4. When it gets dry this Fall/Winter- make sure to run a humidifier! When respiratory passages are moisturised (ie not dry and cracked) they let less germs in!

5. Herbs and supplements! Yes! Of course I love to give herbs and supplements. But *when* and *how much* is so critical. For many supplements you have to dose them early and often (ie every 1-2 hours) to have a big impact on illness! For more specifics with this please schedule an appointment to come in for a visit! September Is Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month!

Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month is a worldwide observance, sponsored and initiated by ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association. Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month promotes thyroid cancer awareness for early detection, as well as care based on expert standards, and increased research to achieve cures for all thyroid cancer.

If you notice a lump or fullness in the neck, lymph node swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or voice changes, these may be signs of a possible thyroid nodule. Most thyroid nodules are benign, but some are cancer.

We encourage you to ask for a neck check when you visit your doctor. A neck check can be done quickly and easily!

Your adrenal glands are powerhouses that are involved in several critical body functions designed to help the body evade dangerous situations. The body is very good at responding to immediate danger, but it is not very good at telling the difference between a predator that is hunting you and an upsetting work email. This means that modern stress and the lack of good coping skills can chronically activate your adrenals, wearing them out over time.

This leads to a condition called adrenal dysfunction, an imbalance of the adrenals that is considered a dysfunction rather than a disease. There are several adrenal diseases in which the glands have significantly high or low output of hormones. Adrenal dysfunction, on the other hand, is when the adrenal glands are performing, just not at optimal levels or not in an optimal rhythm throughout the day.
