Have you noticed headlines about the age of puberty in girls dropping?

Over the last 30 years, we’ve seen a decline in the age at which kids, mostly girls, begin
puberty.

Girls experiencing early puberty often face emotional and psychological challenges, like
increased anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. But the consequences can be even more concerning: early puberty is linked to a higher risk of reproductive health issues later in life, including irregular menstrual cycles, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and even certain types of cancers like breast and ovarian cancer.

Researchers looking to get to the bottom of why this is happening have landed on 3 core
factors:

1️⃣ Obesity
2️⃣ Stress
3️⃣ Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs)

The endocrine-disrupting chemicals that have been identified as possibly contributing to this concerning trend of early puberty include:

➡Bisphenol-a
➡Phthalates
➡Pesticides
➡Certain types of flame retardants
➡PBCs and dioxins

While we can’t avoid all EDCs we can absolutely lower our exposure! Here are some simple tips to get started:

✅Avoid fragranced items (candles, incense, laundry products, perfume, personal care
products, cleaners, etc) that often contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals.
✅Minimize plastics in contact with food which can leach BPA and phthalates.
✅Minimize canned foods & the handling of cash register receipts as both contain BPA
✅Prioritize organic food consumption to minimize pesticide exposure

Most of the discussion of toxic chemicals and health effects tends to focus on women’s health, but women are not exclusively exposed!

Mounting evidence shows that chronic exposure to toxic chemicals in everyday products is
linked to things like prostate and testicular cancer, reduced sperm count and quality, infertility, and even erectile dysfunction.

Here’s some of what we know:

➡️Prostate Cancer: Genetics contribute to ~57% of diagnoses with the remainder attributed to environmental exposures like air pollution, pesticides, and heavy metals, among other factors.

➡️Testicular Cancer: Like prostate cancer, there is a genetic component, but research has also found that prenatal maternal exposures to certain chemicals may increase the risk of testicular cancer in adulthood.

➡️Sperm Health: Chemicals like phthalates, BPA, PFAS, cadmium, lead, and certain pesticides have all been linked to sperm count, morphology (shape), and motility (movement), and are likely contributing to global declines in fertility.

➡️Erectile Dysfunction: Research into both chronic and acute exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals, particularly estrogenic compounds in animal models has found a direct link to erectile dysfunction.

The actions to address these environmental exposures in our daily lives are the same for all
people:

✅Minimize plastic use, especially when in contact with food
✅Avoid fragranced items (cleaning products, personal care products, home/car fragrances)
✅Swap non-stick cookware for cast iron and stainless steel
✅Prioritize organic food when possible
✅Filter drinking water

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune disorder where a person’s immune system inappropriately attacks the thyroid gland.

Symptoms of Hashimoto’s can vary but often include:

👉 Fatigue
👉 Increased sensitivity to cold
👉 Constipation
👉 Dry skin
👉 Problems with memory or concentration
👉 Unexplained weight gain
👉 Muscle and joint pain
👉 Heavy menstrual bleeding
👉 Depression
And more...

Hashimoto’s affects women at 4 times the rate of men!

While the exact cause of Hashimoto’s isn’t known, it appears to be a combination of one’s genes and environmental factors, including infections.

Exposure to certain chemicals has been linked to thyroid disease, including:

🦗Pesticides: Some commonly used pesticides have been associated with thyroid disease.
🥫BPA: Present in plastic bottles and food containers, BPA can interfere with hormone levels.
🧼Phthalates: Found in personal care products & soft plastics, these can disrupt thyroid function.
🏭PCBs: These industrial chemicals persist in the environment and are linked to various
autoimmune diseases, including thyroid disease.
🔥Flame retardants: Many flame retardant chemicals can directly interfere with normal thyroid function.
🍳PFAS: These “forever chemicals” are linked to autoimmune thyroid disease.

Practical steps include prioritizing organic foods, minimizing food contact with plastics, not handling thermal paper (receipts), avoiding products made with PFAS like non-stick cookware, eliminating home fragrances & perfumes, and regularly wet dusting.

Feel free to share your experiences or tips on managing environmental exposures related to Hashimoto’s!

Hormones and neurotransmitters play a crucial role in regulating various functions in our body, from mood to metabolism.

When these chemical messengers are out of balance—whether due to excess or deficiency—it can lead to a range of physical and mental health issues.

Imbalances in cortisol (the stress hormone) can affect stress levels, sleep, and immune function.

Disruptions in thyroid hormones can impact metabolism, energy, and body temperature regulation.

Similarly, serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood and sleep, can cause mood swings, anxiety, or depression when imbalanced.

Whether you have excess or deficiency of hormones and neurotransmitters, it’s important to recognize the signs early and seek appropriate treatment to avoid further complications such as chronic fatigue, mood disorders, heart problems, weight changes, cognitive impairments, and weakened immune function.

Left untreated, imbalances can also contribute to long-term conditions like diabetes, thyroid disease, or anxiety and depression disorders.

If you need support on your health journey, feel free to reach out by calling us at (619) 345-3111! ☎️
