The Hidden Side of Menopause: Grief, Change, and Reclaiming Your True Self
By Crystal Stone -
When we think about menopause, the conversation often centers on hot flashes, night sweats, or changing hormone levels. But beneath those symptoms lies something deeper - an often unspoken emotional landscape. This “hidden side” of menopause brings with it grief, identity shifts, and the challenge of navigating profound change.

Many women describe a quiet ache during this time - not only in their bodies, but in their hearts. There’s grief for the body they once knew, for the roles that no longer fit, and for the younger self who once felt more predictable. Sometimes this grief surfaces as regrets or resentments, building into anger or even rage. The weight of it all can feel overwhelming, and that emotional burden often finds its way into the body - aching joints, tension in the gut, heaviness in the pelvis, or simply a sense that something feels “off.”
Why the Body Holds Emotional and Physical Pain During Change…
Our brains are designed to protect us. When we’re under stress - whether from hormonal swings, loss, or identity transitions - the brain can amplify pain signals. This doesn’t mean the pain isn’t real. It means your nervous system is on high alert, trying to get your attention.
This is where Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) can be a powerful ally. By retraining your brain’s interpretation of pain signals, PRT helps you move from fear and tension into safety and calm. Over time, pain softens, your body feels lighter, and your emotions have more room to breathe.
Practical Ways to Support Yourself Right Now
- Pause & Ground - Place your hand on your heart, breathe slowly, and remind yourself: “I’m safe. I can meet this moment, and this will pass.”
- Acknowledge What’s Here - Say to yourself: “This is grief.” or “This is overwhelm.” Naming it softens the intensity.
- Reframe Pain - When discomfort arises, remind yourself: “This is my brain’s protection mode - not permanent damage. Nothing needs fixing in this moment. It’s ok to take a pause.”
- Find Micro-Joys - Build in one small moment of joy daily - sunshine, music, connection. Small joys calm the nervous system and remind you of your vitality.
